How to tell

Postby Reagan Smith 1H » Sun Nov 17, 2019 9:23 pm

How can you tell which kind of dipole interaction is going on? Like dipole-dipole, induced dipole-induced dipole, etc?

Induced dipole-induced dipole interactions occur between all molecules. Dipole-dipole interactions occur between any molecules that have polar bonds, meaning there is an unequal sharing of electrons within the atoms of a molecule.

Hydrogen bonds occur between a Hydrogen atom that is covalently bonded to a more electronegative atom (F, N, O) and another electronegative atom that has lone pairs. An ion-dipole bond is an electrostatic interaction between an ion and a molecule that has a dipole.
