Hydrogen Bonding

Postby PranaviKolla2B » Wed Nov 20, 2019 7:34 pm

Can hydrogen bonding only occur if an H atom is bonded with a N, O, or F atom?

and there would still be dipole moments and dispersion forces on the compound as well right?

yes, you still should figure out the dipole moments of all the atoms to determine the overall net dipole moment of the molecule

Is there specific work that you would have to show for the dipole moments or just the arrows?

Yeah, you would use arrows to draw the dipole moment for the bonds and then use that to determine the overall dipole moment of the molecule.

Yes, hydrogen bonding can only occur if an H atom is bonded with a N, O, or F atom.

Yes, an H atom has to bond with an N, O, or F atom to be considered as a hydrogen bond.

And O has two hydrogen bonding sites right?

Yes, that's usually correct, but it still depends on how O is arranged on the molecule/compound.

Yes, with a nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine

Yes, hydrogen bonding only occurs with the nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine elements.

Yes, hydrogen bonding only occurs when H is bonded with N, O, or F.

Yes, Hydrogen can obviously bond with other atoms but, hydrogen bonding only occurs when an H atom is bonded with an F, N, or O.

Yes. These are the only atoms that can make a hydrogen bond. Hydrogen can make other bonds with other atoms.

yes! also, lone pairs on N, O, or F serve as hydrogen bonding sites.

Yes, only those three atoms! But they also have to have a partial negative charge.

Yes Hydrogen bonding only occurs between F, O, or N. C-H and H-C hydrogen bonds do not occur because the dipole moment is too weak for there to be a hydrogen bond with any hydrogen connected to a carbon.

Yes. Hydrogen atoms must be polarized by F, O, or N in order for a hydrogen bond to occur.
