What are dipole moments

Postby jordanginyard_ » Thu Nov 19, 2020 6:23 pm

What is the importance of dipole moments? Are there rules that we need to know? Recommended videos.

The dipole moment is a measurement of the polarity of a molecule. The larger the difference in electronegativity, the larger the dipole moment. I'm sure you can find more info on youtube videos!

There's a video on dipole moments by the organic chemistry tutor on youtube (lifesaver), but you should also consider going to a UA/TA office hours if the video explanation isn't clear.

The dipole moment is how we can measure the difference in charge between to atoms or molecules and are typically represented by an arrow showing the way electrons are being pulled. This is an important concepts because this is one way molecules and ions are able to interact, although it is a fairly week attraction. This was discussed in lecture 17 if you want to rewatch how it was explained in class

The word moment might confuse you, but it just means that there is polarity in the molecule, due to the difference in electronegativity between the atoms.

I was also struggling with understanding what dipole moments are and the website above helped me understand them better. I hope It can help!

There are also two different types of dipole moments: a permanent dipole moment and an induced dipole moment. Molecules with polar bonds have permanent dipole moments and can interact with other polar molecules and create dipole-dipole forces. On the other hand, molecules with induced dipole moments can have forces such as dipole-induced dipole and London dispersion forces.

I was also kind of confused about this but then I watched this video and it helped clear it up for me. Hope it does the same for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1GgVwqiufE

The dipole moment has to do with the polarity of of a molecule and is important in determining bond strength. Like said about the organic chemistry tutor on youtube is a life saver!

A dipole moment is the polarity of a molecule which is important to know because polarity determines how well molecules bond which determines a lot of chemical structures.
