Re: Transition Metals
Professor Lavelle covered how to name coordination compounds which includes the ligand names and then the TM cation name. We would have to memorize the prefixes to indicate the number of ligands like mono,di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa,. You'd have to memorize that the ligands must have one or more lone pairs. In a sense you do have to memorize that if they gave you NH3 then you would name that ammine within the coordination compound naming.

Re: Transition Metals
Like Preston said above, it is not necessarily memorization. By taking the information Professor Lavelle has taught us, we can name the compounds via context clues. If you do this, you could see a molecule you have not seen before and still be able to name it without a prior attempt to memorize.
Re: Transition Metals
Correct, we need to memorize all the rules that Lavelle covered in class rather than memorizing actual names. Additionally, we should probably be very familiar with the names in table 9C.1

Re: Transition Metals
Although I don't think it's essential to memorize all ligand names, I think it's pretty important to know the ligands that Dr. Lavelle has covered in lectures and the ligands in the table 9C.1 in the textbook. Also, I would make sure to know the rules for naming ligands and writing their formulas.

Re: Transition Metals
you need to know the rules to name a compound. Once you get how it's done, it shouldn't be hard for u to name a complex after seeing its molecular formula. We covered this topic in lecture.

Yes, I agree with what everyone is saying. It's more of knowing the steps of how to name and less of memorizing the names itself.
