Achieve Question 11: N-H vs. N-O

Postby Katelyn Wu 1I » Tue Nov 05, 2024 12:16 am

In Achieve #11, can someone clarify why N-H has a shorter bond length than N-O? I assumed that since N and O are both further right on the periodic table, they both have a smaller atomic radius and should therefore have a shorter bond. Is N-H only smaller because H is one row higher?

The bond length of N-H is shorter than N-O . The bond length of N-H is shorter than N-O because hydrogen is significantly smaller than both nitrogen and oxygen, allowing the N-H bond to be shorter.

NH has a shorter bond length than NO as hydrogen only has 1 electron while oxygen has 8 electrons. Bond length is influenced by the number of electrons and electronegativity. Additionally, N and H have a larger electronegativity difference than N and O which means that the N and H are more tightly bonded together.
