What is bond character and how does it relate to bond length?

Bond character is the nature of the bonding interaction between atoms in a molecule. It indicates how covalent or ionic the bond is, based on the distribution of electron density between the atoms. This impacts bond length primarily through the balance of ionic versus covalent interactions and bond order. Generally, stronger bonds with higher covalent character and bond order lead to shorter bond lengths, while increased ionic character can result in longer bond lengths.
