Determining Bond Length

Postby CelineTrad 1I » Sat Nov 09, 2024 2:40 pm

Hi! So I’m aware that bond length is determined by electronegativitty, bond order, and atomic radius. How do these three work together in order to put the bonds from shortest to longest? If two contradict each other then what happens?

Bond length is determined by atomic radius and bond order.
Students need to know the trends I discussed in class.

For example, H-F is a shorter stronger bond than H-Br due to increasing halogen atomic radius.

N2 is a very short, strong triple bond (bond order = 3).

The above are the types of examples discussed in class and students should know.

Otherwise, one needs to be given specific radii for different bond types and calculate the bond length.
