relationship between bond length and energy

Postby Isabelle Huerta 2I » Tue Dec 05, 2023 2:02 am

hello,

I was going through the problems and I wanted some clarification on this. How can bond length influence the amount of energy it can store?

thanks.

Hi! Bond length is inversely proportional to the energy of the bonds. Therefore, if you have a longer bond, the energy is decreased, while shorter bonds means higher energy stored. Hope this helps!

The bond length in a molecule influences the amount of energy it can store because the potential energy of a bond is related to the bond length. The potential energy of a bond decreases as the atoms come closer together (bond shortens) and increases as they move farther apart (bond lengthens).
