bond lengths in resonance

Postby Nicholas Ryan 2K » Sun Dec 10, 2023 2:37 pm

How do you find the bond lengths of a molecule with resonance structures (i.e. when the single bonds have some double-bond character)?

When trying to calculate the bond length of a structure with resonance, you have to take the average of bonds lengths of all the separate structures that contribute to the resonance hybrid.

In molecules with resonance structures, the bond lengths are an average of the bond lengths found in the different resonance forms. We can estimate the values through experimental information from spectroscopy or xrays.
