### Bond length, 2012 Midterm Question 6B

Using molecular orbital theory, list the following molecules from shortest bond length to the longest bond length.

B2^+, B2, B2^-, B2^2-

How would you tell which which would have to shortest or the longest length?

You use the molecular orbital diagram and find the bond order for each.

1) Find lewis structures for all ions.
2) Ensure you draw structures correctly.
3) Examine the type of bonds being formed (i.e. single, double, triple, etc).

Note: The more bonds that appear between two atoms/ions, the more energy is present, and the closer the pull of electrons to the nucleus. In this sense, a triple bond is stronger and shorter than both a double bond and single bond. Likewise, a double bond is both stronger and shorter than a single bond.

A better way to figure this out is by determining the bond order of each, rather than drawing out the lewis structures.
