Lengths of Bonds

Postby Brandon Mo 4K » Thu Nov 01, 2018 6:49 pm

Why are double bonds shorter than single bonds?

Cause the electron density is higher?

Btw does anyone know why is that when calculating the bond length of say BiF4, we only sum up the bond length of Bi and F, instead of summing the lengths of Bi and 4Fs?

The book states that "multiple bonds are shorter than single bonds between the same two elements because the additional bonding electrons attract the nuclei more strongly and pull the atoms closer together" (7th ed. pg 100)
Hope this helps!

The concept is sort of similar to how as you move across a period on the periodic table the atomic radius becomes shorter because the charge is greater so there's more attraction between the valence shell and the nucleus. Similarly, the more bonds there are, the shorter the distance between atoms

Double bonds are shorter than single bonds because double bonds are stronger and more attracted to the protons in the nucleus. Single bonds are as strong, therefore they are not going to be as attracted to the nucleus.

Because they have a stronger bond which pulls the atoms closer together.

because the larger number of shared electrons draw the atoms in closer together

Because the double bond has a stronger attraction between the atoms, which pulls to form a shorter bond than a single bond.
