### Bond Lengths

Can someone explain to me the process for determining bond lengths?

Bond lengths are usually given on questions and if they are asking to find the bond length of lewis structures, you have to take into consideration resonance structures.

^ that and also, if a question asks you to determine actual bond length from several givens it's just the average.

### Re: Bond Lengths

Bond length decreases as the number of bonds increases since the two atoms are more strongly attracted to one another. For example, triple bonds are shorter than double bonds which are shorter than single bonds. When determining bond length, take the average of all the bond lengths in the resonance structures. It seems like it'd be more difficult, but it's actually quite simple since the bond lengths of a resonance structure are actually just a blend of all the bond lengths.

When the molecule has resonance structures, you need to find the average bond length. For example, if the molecule has a single bond in one form of resonance and a double bond in the other, you need to calculate the average of the two.

To expand on what others have said, another way to determine bond lengths is if it is a larger atom there is a larger distance causing it to have a weak bond but longer bond length.

When drawing Lewis Structures, would the structure be marked incorrect if you don't draw the bonds to have the correct angles like 120 degrees, etc.?
