Re: finding bond length
In addition, you can find the bond length of a molecule using its other properties such as ionization energy difference. So, if the ionization energy is greater, then the bond length will be shorter.

Re: finding bond length
I remember in lecture Dr. Lavelle said something about looking the bond length up which I'm guessing means we need to be given enough information to solve for it if not I think it might be given to us.

Re: finding bond length
From what I remember about high school chemistry though, bond length is determined by the bond order. So if there's more bonds between electrons, the stronger the pull, and therefore a shorter bond length. triple bond < double bond < single bond. single bond should be the longest because there are only 2 electrons pulling it together.

Re: finding bond length
also if the structure has some single bonds and some double bonds the overall bond length will be somewhere between the given values for two types of bonds

Re: finding bond length
For covalent bonds, bond energies and bond lengths depend on many factors: electron afinities, sizes of atoms involved in the bond, differences in their electronegativity, and the overall structure of the molecule. There is a general trend in that the shorter the bond length, the higher the bond energy.
For ionic bonds, bond length is dependent on the bond order. Whether it is a single, double or triple bond. Single bonds are the longest and triple bonds are the shortest.
