3.97 6th ed

3.97 White phosphorus is composed of tetrahedral molecules of P4 in which each P atom is connected to three other P atoms. Draw the Lewis structure for this molecule. Does it obey the octet rule?

How do I go about this and what's the rule for whether an atom can have more than an octet?

Yes, the molecule obeys the octet rule, however, phosphorous can have an expanded octet in other instances.

Start by connecting all of the P to each other (literally make sure each P has a line to all the rest). Then apply the valence electron rule, where you make sure you have the correct number. You'll find you don't need any expanded octets.
