Place the following molecules or ions in order of decreasing bond length: the CO bond in CO, CO2, CO3^2-... How do you determine the bond lengths for these molecules/ions in order to determine the order? Do you need to draw the lewis structures?

Yes, you should draw the Lewis structures first the way we always do it (counting valence electrons and following the octet rule) and see which structures contain single, double or triple bonds. The single bonds have the greatest length followed by double and then triple bonds.

You must draw out each Lewis structure to determine how many bonds are between the molecules in each specific example.
