When looking at the bond length of a resonance structure, is the bond length of a resonance double bond the exact middle of the length of the single bond and double bond. Like if the double bond is 100 and the single bond is 110, is the resonance bond length 105? Or just a value in between the two lengths.
I think finding an average of the given bond values is the best way to find the bond length in the resonance structure. It may not be necessarily exact or equal to the actual observed value, but it should be fairly close.
It's hard to say if it would be the exact average of it as it would depend on the atoms present within the molecule and their associated pull to affect the bond length. But I would agree that it would be fairly close to the average of the two, but may lean slightly towards one of the bond lengths numbers as in class we saw how the resonance bond length was around 1.29 A or so when the associated bond lengths were 1.20 A and 1.40 A
To find the length of a resonance bond length you find the average of the length between the two bond lengths given. This is because in a resonance structure, no bonds are actually longer than others, it just appears that way when we draw them as a lewis structure.
