Single, Double, Triple Bond Lengths

Postby juleschang16 » Sat Nov 24, 2018 3:00 pm

What is the order of increasing bond lengths? Do triple bonds have the longest bond length or do single bonds have the longest bond length?

single bonds have the longest bond length and therefore the weakest bond, double bond is next and triple bond has the shortest bond length and therefore the strongest

This is because the additional bonding of electrons attracts the nuclei of the bonded atoms closer to each other.

In addition, when looking at the molecule and bonding geometrically, pi bonds are formed between atoms that are closer in distance. Also, the shorter the bond, the stronger the bond, so you can think of it that way when determining which is the longest and shortest.

Single > double > triple bonds. My thought process is that since double and triple bonds have pi bonds, which are overlap/side-to-side orbital interactions the bonds have to be closer than a single.

Triple bonds are the shortest and single bonds are the longest because as more bonds between atoms occur, it brings the two atoms closer together.
