Bond lengths

Postby NicoJones_1B » Sun Oct 13, 2019 11:10 am

If not given the particular bond length between two molecules, is there a way to find out the bond length?

Not sure if you can, but when you do I believe it is the sum of the radii. Here's a link for the radii lengths of different atoms:

Bond lengths are accepted values that were experimentally obtained, so we would have to be given them as there is no equation to figure out a bond length

I believe that Dr. Lavelle mentioned this once in his lectures. A bond length between two molecules is about 10^-10m, which is equal to 1 Angstrom.

Yes, this is correct. A bond length is always equal to 1 angstrom

Then if the bond length is always the same why is it important?

I believe we would be given this!

would the bond length vary when it is a double or triple bond?

Yes! Multiple bonds will be shorter than single bonds.

Yes! Multiple bonds will be shorter than single bonds.

For example, because a double bond is stronger than a single bond, the double bond's length will be relatively shorter since the atoms are pulled together with more strength.

How could there be any variance in bond length if it’s always one angstrom?

Bond lengths equal one Angstrom, and will lively be given. However, double bonds will be shorter than single bonds a lot of the time because they have a stronger pull between molecules, likely pulling them closer together and requiring a shorter bond.

Are double bonds always shorter than single bonds? Are there any exceptions?

Are bond lengths different for each molecule or are they always the same length?

Does anyone know that actual length of double and triple bonds? Will we need to know this on the tests?

There's no formula but there are very specific lengths for certain bonds that I doubt will be expected knowledge to know on the test
