bond lengths for single or double bonds

Postby Fdonovan 3D » Sun Oct 27, 2019 8:30 pm

Are double bonds typically longer than single bonds, or vice versa? Are there any general rules about this or does it vary?

Bond lengths between atoms with multiple bonds are shorter than those with single bonds. Double bonds are shorter than single bonds, and triple bonds are shorter than double bonds.

The stronger the bond, the shorter the bond length, so double bonds will be shorter than single bonds.

not sure if it varies, but generally, the stronger the bond, the shorter the length. So a triple would be shorter than a double and a double would be shorter than a single

Triple bonds are shorter than both double bonds and single bonds, but they are stronger than both of those. Single bonds are longer than both double and triple bonds, but are also weaker than both of those.

Double bonds are stronger, and therefore shorter, than single bonds. However, in resonance structures, each bond is somewhere between the length of a double and single bond.
