### Bond Length (2D.13)

How do you find bond length?

2D.13 Place the following molecules or ions in order of decreas- ing bond length: (a) the CO bond in CO, CO2, CO322; (b) the SO bond in SO2, SO3, SO322; (c) the CN bond in HCN, CH2NH, CH3NH2. Explain your reasoning.

Hi!
For this specific example, I don't think you have to calculate the bond length numerically. I think each portion of the problem includes a single, double, and triple bond. Single bonds are the longest while triple bonds are the shortest. For each section, draw Lewis diagrams of each compound and figure out what type of bond each has. This will help you determine shortest and longest.
Hope this helps!

First draw out the lewis structure for each example and compare bond lengths with single, double, or triple bonds. A triple bond has the strongest and shortest bond length while a single bond has the weakest and longest bond length.
