Lone electron pairs weakening bonds

Dr. Lavelle talked about how fluorine, F2, has a weaker than expected bond strength because of lone electron pairs on neighboring atoms.

Why do lone electron pairs on neighboring atoms weaken the bonds?

Due to electron repulsion from the lone pairs, the bond will be weaker as the repulsive force of the electrons go against the attractive force of the bond.

The lone pair electrons of fluorine would be interacting with each other because of the small size of fluorine atoms, causing a repelling force that would weaken the overall bond. That's why fluorine has a fairly small dissociation energy because of these lone pair electron interactions between the atoms repelling them.

The lone pairs of the electrons found on neighboring atoms weaken these bonds due to electron repulsion. The neighboring atoms in a molecule that have lone pair electrons are not bonded as tightly because the lone pair electrons of both atoms repel one another.

Lone pairs on bonded atoms weaken the bond because of repulsion. Electrons are negatively charged - like charges repel each other, so the repulsion of these clustered electrons weakens the bond.
