bond length

Postby kevinolvera1j » Sat Nov 02, 2019 7:52 pm

Is it possible to find the length of a bond based on its strength or vice versa?

i am not sure, but the usual assumption is that the longer the bond, the weaker the bond.

If it is possible, we have not learned it. However, it is easy to infer the relative strength of the bond through the length of the bond. Short bonds are stronger than long bonds.

triple bonds are the shortest bonds, double bonds are slightly longer, and single bonds are the longest.

As everyone has mentioned, there is probably a way to find the exact bond length (in angstroms) based on its strength or vice versa, but I believe that's beyond the scope of this course. I think the main thing we need to know is the relationship between bond length and strength – the longer the bond, the weaker it is and vice versa.

I believe it is possible, but for now all we need to know is that double bonds are shorter and also stronger than single bonds

Also, triple bonds are shorter and stronger than double bonds :)
