2D.19

Postby Gabriella Bates 2L » Sun Nov 03, 2019 12:40 pm

"Use the covalent radii in Fig. 2D.11 to calculate the bond lengths in the following molecules. Account for the trends in your calculated values: (a) CF 4; (b) SiF 4; (c) SnF 4"

Can someone explain how to do this? Thank you

"Use the covalent radii in Fig. 2D.11 to calculate the bond lengths in the following molecules. Account for the trends in your calculated values: (a) CF 4; (b) SiF 4; (c) SnF 4"
In order to find the bond length of covalent bonds you need to add together the 2 covalent radii for the elements. For a) the covalent radius of C is 77(because it forms a single bond with F in CF4) and the covalent radius of F is 58, so the bond length is 77+58= 135 pm.
The same process is used for parts b and c.
