Focus 2.25

Postby Kelly Cai 4D » Sun Nov 03, 2019 6:14 pm

Which bond is longer: (a) the CN bond in HCN or in H3CNH2? (b) The NF bond in NF3 or the PF bond in PF3?

Does this relate to the inverse relationship between bond length and bond order?

For a the difference is that multiple bonds(double or triple) are shorter than single bonds, and for b the difference is that P is a bigger atom, so the length is naturally longer.

A relates to the inverse bond order-bond length, and B is related to the size of an atom and the how bond length increases/decreases as related, hope this helps!
