Bond Strength

How exactly is bond strength determined? I know it is dependent on the number of bonds but how do you tell the difference of bond strengths between different atoms?

I remember there being a table in the textbook that gives you relative bond strengths between different atoms.

I believe that exact values of bond strength are determined experimentally through finding the dissociation energy. For our purposes, we can use a provided table of bond strengths and lengths to determine strength. The more bonds there are between atoms, the stronger the bond. Additionally, the shorter the bond length, the stronger the bond.

Bond strength is determined by a number of factors besides the number of bonds. Bonds are weakened if the atoms involved are large or if there are lone pairs on nearby atoms. Bond strength is also affected by the electronegativities of the atoms involved and their bond lengths (or resonance).

there are lots of different factors affecting bond strength such as bond length, number of lone pairs, bond multiplicity and more
