Bond lengths

Postby 905174774 » Thu Nov 14, 2019 7:07 pm

Are we given information to determine how far these bonds i.e single, double, triple; are or do we just have to know in order how far they are like concept wise?

I think we should know concept wise

I think we should just know that single bonds are typically longer and weaker, while double and triple bonds become shorter and stronger.

I believe that we should know that as bond strength increases, bond length decreases.

I think we need to know it concept-wise, like which are stronger and shorter and which are longer and weaker.

Because each element has different bond lengths depending on what it is being bonded with, we would probably be given the bond lengths in a question

It did say in the textbook that a single bond would not be three times longer than a triple bond or a single bond would not be two times longer than a single bond.

also don't bond lengths depend on the atoms, ie a bond between two very electronegative atoms would be shorter? also has to do with atomic radius

I think the bond lengths do vary slightly depending on the atoms, based on their electron affinity.
