hydrogen bonding vs ion-dipole

Postby Megan Singer 3D » Sat Dec 12, 2020 7:49 pm

Are hydrogen bonds or ion-dipole bonds stronger? From the notes it seems like hydrogen bonding releases more energy than ion-dipole (-20 vs -15), but from what I've seen online it looks like ion-dipole forces are stronger than hydrogen bonds.

I think that specific example for ion-dipole that was used in lecture is weaker than hydrogen bonds, while generally ion-dipole interactions are stronger. In my lecture notes I have written down "Ion-ion>Ion-dipole>Dipole-dipole" where hydrogen bonds are dipole-dipole interactions, so I am assuming that it's right.

I think ion-dipole is stronger than H-bonds

Hi! I have a question relating to this topic. Can hydrogen bonds only occur between atoms that have dipole moments? Or can a H that is partially positively charged bond to a fully negatively charged ion? It would be great if someone could clear this up for me, thanks!

Hydrogen bonding can only occur between an H that is already bonded to a N, O, or F, and an N, O, or F. I think ions attract H+s too strongly, so if a Hydrogen was attracted to an anion it would probably go through an acid base reaction instead of just forming a hydrogen bond. The second part is just a guess though, not sure if it's true.

Ion-dipole forces are stronger than hydrogen bonds, as hydrogen bonds are simply a strong type of dipole-dipole forces. Since ion-dipole forces are always stronger than dipole-dipole, ion-dipole forces are stronger than hydrogen bonds.
