Ionization energy of B and Be

Postby isabella garcia - 1G » Sun Dec 05, 2021 3:17 am

Why does Be have a higher ionization energy than B? Following the trend on the periodic table, B should have a higher ionization energy and I can't make sense of why it's the other way around.

Be has a higher ionization energy than B because B has B has greater shielding. Be has the electron configuration 1s2 2s2 while B has the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p1. Therefore, the 2p1 for B is more shielded and easier to remove than the 2s2 of Be.
