Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Good afternoon,
I was wondering what the difference between the electron and molecular geometry was?

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Electron geometry basically describes the arrangement of electron groups while molecular geometry describes the arrangement of atoms in relation to the central atom. Hope that helps!

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Exactly what Madilyn said, but keep in mind that we will only be tested on molecular geometry, and whenever the shape is asked we are talking about the position of the atoms. Hope this helps!

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
It's also important to note that the placement of both atoms and lone electrons helps determine the molecular geometric shape. This is because the location of the lone electron pairs can change the bond angles between atoms (the electrons have a greater repulsion than bonded atoms).

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Hi!
Electronic geometry takes into account all the bonding pairs as well as lone pairs on the central atom. molecular geometry only looks at the bonding pairs.

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
the difference is that electron geometry takes into account all regions of electron density, so lone pairs, and atoms, while molecular geometry only accounts for atoms to determine shape.

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
for example, water has tetrahedral electron geometry, but a bent molecular geometry

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
electron geometry does not take into account whether the region of density is a bond or pair; molecular does.

Electron Geometry:
-number of total electron pairs are calculated
-takes lone pairs into account
-shape of a molecule based on electron bond pairs and lone electron pairs
Molecular Geometry:
-does not take lone pairs into account
-number of bonding electron pairs are calculated
-shape of a molecule based on only electron bond pairs

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
molecular geometry is the arrangement of atoms in relation to a central atom in three-dimensional space, or in other words, the atom position. Electron geometry is the arrangement of electron groups.

Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
The main difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry is that electron geometry is found by taking both lone electron pairs and bonds in a molecule whereas molecular geometry is found using only the bonds present in the molecule.
Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Molecular geometry focuses on the bonds in a molecule while electron geometry focuses on the electron placement and charges of the atoms in a molecule
Re: Difference between electron geometry and molecular geometry
Hi!
Molecular geometry is the arrangement of atoms relative to the central atom, whereas electron geometry is the arrangement of electron groups.
