Errors in Solutions for 2E exercises

Postby Jayson Hall 2H » Sat Dec 09, 2023 5:41 pm

In the answer exercise 11b, the solutions given in the textbook correctly labels ICl3 as a T-shaped molecule, but incorrectly gives the VSEPR formula as AX4E2 (should be AX3E2).

In 13c), the solution draws single bonds between the central iodine and two of the oxygens when there should be double bonds.

In 13d), the solution lists the bond angle for linear as '180.5' instead of 180.

Hi Jayson,

Great post. Thanks for this.
I checked everything and here are my comments:

2E.11b
Always use the solutions manual for all answers, and they are also much more detailed answers than the very brief answers at the back of the book (which tend to have typos).
The solutions manual has the correct answer: AX3E2

2E.13c
Answer in the solutions manual gives the correct shape, but the Lewis structure should show the more stable structure with double bonds between the central iodine and two of the oxygens.

2E.13d
Solutions manual is correct, 180o. Back of the book has a typo.

I added my comments to my file, Solution Manual Errors 7th Edition, and uploaded the updated file online.

Enjoy your winter break.
