Structure of Benzene

Postby 606453087 » Sun Nov 10, 2024 4:24 pm

hello! i was doing a textbook problem that asked for the lewis structure of benzene C6H6, and i drew the structure in a straight linear line rather than in a planar structure. can someone explain why it's planar and not linear? thank you!

Hi!
Benzene is planar because of the way its orbitals interact when its bonded. For benzene, its atoms are "sp2 hybridized", which means that one s orbital is "mixed" with 2 p orbitals. This is what makes the structure planar rather than linear.
Hope that helps!
