Lone Pairs and Angles

Postby MariaKefalas1G » Thu Nov 14, 2024 1:04 am

How much effect do lone pairs have on bonding angles? Is there a way to calculate it? Or does it depend on the atom, number of bonds, etc?

Hi, I'm not sure if this will fully answer your question but my TA was talking about how the angles will be slightly smaller with lone pairs. So the normal bond angle of something would be 109.5 or something like that. Then if you add a set of lone pairs it would make it 107 and if you add another one ifs 105. I believe there is not a way we have learned to calculate this. Its just assumed that the angle will be slightly smaller with more lone pairs.
