Resonance Structures

Postby chloew1J » Thu Nov 14, 2024 7:25 pm

Hello. Which resonance structure would you use in the VSEPR model? Resonance structures can differ in the shared bonds on the central atom or the lone pairs on the central atom, but in the end do all of the structures equate to the same VSEPR model? Thanks.

Hello,

I believe that for the VSEPR model, the resonance structures do not affect the VSEPR model because the regions of electron density are the same.

To answer your question, yes all resonance structures equate to the same VSEPR model, due to all of them showing the same electron geometry around an atom. Therefore no matter the atom and its different resonance structures, they all essentially show the same configuration/shape.
