Shape of I3 - ion

Postby AnaiGutierrez_1D » Tue Dec 03, 2024 11:59 pm

Why is the shape of an [I3]- ion linear and not angular? Since the central atom has two lone pairs shouldn't this make it angular?

With the 5 electron regions around the central atom, we can picture a trigonal bipyramidal structure. Then to minimize electron pair repulsion, the bonding pairs align in an axial position which explains the linear shape.
Hope this helps!
