VSEPR double bonds

Postby ashleyhchung » Thu Dec 05, 2024 3:45 am

When I'm drawing the VSEPR shape, do I have to take into account double bonds? Or are the shapes just standard? Like for example, HCN.

Hi, I believe for VSEPR, double bonds are treated the same as single bonds since it's really only focusing on areas of electron density. So I believe the shapes will be standard and drawn the same as if they had single bonds.

Can you clarify what you mean by standard shapes? I think that as long as you account for your bonding pairs/regions of electron density, you are on the right track when drawing the VSEPR shape of a molecule.
Hope this helps!
