Hybridization

Postby JohnVRobinson » Sat Dec 09, 2023 2:55 pm

How does hybridization change a molecules shape. I understand that different hybridization states make different molecular shapes, but what's the reason?

Hybridization shapes molecules by combining atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals, optimizing bonding and minimizing electron pair repulsion. Different hybridization states yield distinct geometric arrangements, influencing the overall molecular shape. In essence, hybridization is key to understanding and predicting the three-dimensional structure of molecules.
