Is there a rule for the determination of double/triple bonds?

Essentially, you have to use double bonds when there is one pi bond between the two atoms and then you have to typically use a triple bond when there are two pi bonds between two atoms. Of course this is determined by the number of valence electrons that are available too, but that's essentially the main way to figure out when to use a double/triple bond.

There isn't really one rule to determine bonds. It's usually based on the valence electrons of the atoms involved. A double bond involves the sharing of four electrons (two pairs), while a triple bond involves the sharing of six electrons (three pairs), and the arrangement depends on satisfying the valence electron requirements of the atoms to achieve stability.
