When taking the final exam I did not have a strong understanding of isomers. What determines whether an isomer is cis or trans?

The orientation of the molecule determines if an isomer is cis or trans. If the parts of the molecule that are repeated on each side are on the same side, it is cis. If they are on opposite sides it is trans.
