Presence of Lone Pairs

When determining the shape of an atom using VSEPR, how do we determine which region of electron density to replace with a lone pair? We learned about this in Wednesday's lecture but this part was unclear to me.

Dear Elle,
I'm a bit unclear about this as well. i believe that it does not matter where it is removed from because once it is removed and the lone pair is put, the other atoms will move and arrange in a way where they are as stable and far away from each other as possible.

You want the lone pair electrons to be as far away from each other, so for example if you have two sets of lone pairs they would be 180 degrees apart from each other. For just one lone pair, it does not really make to much of a difference where you place the electrons because the lone pair will be applied to all other atoms and make the angle degree smaller.
