determining the VSEPR shape of the molecule

Postby Katrina_Domingo_3G » Sat Oct 29, 2016 11:21 am

In determining the VSEPR shape of the molecule, do we use the lewis structure that follows the octet rule or the better structure that reduces the formal charges to it's lowest values or does it not matter?

Use the better Lewis structure.

When using the Lewis structures, how do we do structures for molecules for example problem 4.11, when there's xenon or iodine, when they have only one unpaired electron bond have several atoms attached to them? They don't follow the octet rule so how do we determine how many atoms the whole molecule should contain?
