Homework 4.25

When drawing CH2Cl2, how does one know to place the H molecules next to each other and Cl molecules next to each other, rather than drawing them across from each other so that the molecule is non polar?

You're thinking about the molecule from a two dimensional point of view. Using VSEPR, the molecule is tetrahedral in shape. When looking at a tetrahedral molecule, you will see that the Cl atoms will always be next to each other and the H atoms will be next to each other, resulting in a molecule that is polar.
