How do you determine whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar?

Polar molecules are simply molecules that has polarity as in there is a difference in the strength of the atoms in the molecules, ie: H2O is a polar molecules because the oxygen molecule has greater electronegativity than the hydrogen atoms which causes dipole moment that leads to what a polar molecule is. Nonpolar molecules are molecules that share electrons in a similar fashion so that one part of the molecule will not be positive and another would be negative, ie: CH4 or O2 etc.

Another approach would be to draw out the dipole moments (pointing toward the more electronegative atom in each case) and treat them like vectors. If all of the dipole moments have a corresponding equal and opposite one, then the molecule is nonpolar; if they do not, then the molecule is polar. It is also important to note that opposite dipole moments are only equal if they are pointing to the same type of atom (i.e. same element). Hope this helped! (:
