With the molecular shape and VSEPR, would it be just easier to memorize the different angles and shapes and names for the test?

Personally, I️ think memorizing what type of shape a certain number atom molecule is and the angles associated with that is the quickest way to learn! But once you know it for a single 3 atom molecule you know it for all 3 atom molecules!

I'd recommend trying to learn to visualize the shapes that the lewis structures show, as it will make attaching a name to the shapes much easier.

Try out lots of homework problems and you'll learn the patterns by doing rather than having to memorize. There's no harm in flashcards, but try out some examples!

Try to learn the shapes rather than memorize, because if you can associate a certain shape with a certain molecule, then you will be okay. Knowing how many atoms connect to a central atom and what shape that makes is good for visualization when there are lone pairs that can distort it.

I would say try and learn basic shapes and their names and angles. In my discussion, my TA went through 5 shapes (linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, and octahedral) and from each of those, changed bonds into lone pairs until there were only three atoms (two bonds) left. This honestly helped me understand and remember the shapes so much better. Memorizing them as a progression really helps.
