Exercise 4.7 and 4.9

I am confused as to why 4.7 is a trigonal pyramidal but 4.9 is not? I have a feeling it has something to do with electron repulsion, but I don't quite understand it fully.

Yeah, it has to do with electron repulsion! Since there are 2 lone pairs on Iodine in ICl3, the electron repulsions balance each other out so the shape remains T-shaped, as opposed to how Sulfur in SOCl2 has a single lone pair that repels the bonded electron pairs.

Since lone pairs have a greater electron repulsion than electrons in bonds, these lone pairs push the bonded atoms closer together.
