4.25 (Polarity)

For questions similar to 4.25, how do you determine if the compound is polar or non polar? If the dipole cancels, then it is non polar, right?

Yes if the dipole moment cancels than it is non polar. If one atom is more electronegative than the other than it will be pulling more towards it so it will become polar.

To my knowledge, that is correct. You can also tell if a compound is polar or nonpolar based on the symmetry of the compound. If all the "outside" atoms are the same element, then it is non polar because the elecrtrons will be distributed equally. Sometimes a compound can have polar bonds but be non polar as a whole because it is evened out

Drawing out the molecular structure, then proceeding to see if the dipole moments cancel each other out. If they cancel each other out, then they are non polar, if not, then the molecule is polar. Also, all hydrocarbons are non polar!

The shape of the poly atomic molecule affects whether it is polar or not. First, draw the lewis structure. Then, use the VSEPR formula to name the molecular shape. Then you can identify the polarity by the dipoles. If the symmetry allows the dipoles to cancel, then the molecule is nonpolar. The molecule is polar if the dipoles cancel.
