when drawing a lewis structure if we know the molecular shape of it from vsper do we draw it accordingly? or are we allowed to place the bonds andywhere around the central atom?

Hi Lauryn,

When drawing the lewis structures, you draw the bonds distributed equally about the central atom in 2D. VSEPR tells us that this molecule exists in 3D, and that if an atom like CH4 has 4 bonds distributed about it equally, the bond angles are not 90, but 109.5 degrees.

Hope this helps.

When drawing Lewis structures, the bonds can be placed at any angle around the central atom. We are not responsible for drawing VSEPR models, but it will help to understand the 3D shape, and you must know the bond angles for the given shapes.
