Lone pairs and naming shape

Postby torialmquist1F » Mon Nov 27, 2017 12:20 pm

Is the lone pair taken into account when naming the shape of a molecule? Why or why not?

Lone pairs are taken into consideration when naming the shape of the molecule because the electron repulsion from the lone pairs affects the bond angles and therefore the shape of the molecule.

Using lone pairs may also help to write the VESPR type, which can help with naming of the shape. For example, if you had one lone pair on the central atom and three bonded atoms, the VSEPR would be AX3E, and as a result, you can tell the shape from this.
