Molecular shape/ lewis structure

Postby 804991762_4A » Wed May 23, 2018 9:02 pm

In lecture, Lavelle said it doesn't matter if the Lewis structure is not at its lowest formal charge, so if it doesn't matter since the shape will remain the same, can we leave it as is, or should we make it to the lowest formal charge?

It often won't matter if the question is just asking for molecular shape.

If the question is asking for Lewis structure and shape, formal charges must be minimized in accordance with other guidelines (octets, etc).

Safe bet is always draw the most stable Lewis structure.
