VSEPR

Postby Jacob Samuels 1E » Fri May 25, 2018 5:53 pm

Does the type of bond (single, double, triple) affect the VSEPR formula? Like is it AX2 if there is a double bond or is it still just AX?

The number of bonds doesn't affect how you use the VSEPR model to draw molecular shapes. Single, double, and triple bonds are all treated as one region of electron density. Therefore, it doesn't matter which resonance structure you use to draw a molecular structure because you'll get the same result.
On the other hand, lone pair electrons do affect molecular shape according to the VSEPR model.

no matter what type of bond is occurring, you just consider it as a single bond, which means yes, one double bound is still AX
That's why we said in VSEPR model, the resonance does not matter.

The type of bond doesn’t affect the formula so a double bond would still show up as AX.
