Difference in angles

Postby paulacamara1E » Sun May 27, 2018 8:29 pm

Professor Lavelle pointed out two different types of bonds in lecture, bond angles and just angles, could someone clarify that please? my notes confused me with the terms

bond angles show how far the bonds can be placed from each other!

He may have used both terms, but I think he is referring to the same thing. So, in this case, both bond angles and just "angles" are just the angles that are caused by atoms repelling each other. The atoms must be separated as symmetrical as possible which is why the angles get smaller as there are more areas of electron density.

I think you might have been confused because with certain Vsepr structures, such as trigonal bipyramidal, we can know the bond angles. However, when a lone pare is introduced it can effect the bond angles. For instance if a bond in a trigonal bipyramidal structure were replaced with a lone pair the angles would no longer be 90°, 120°, 180°. In class professor lavelle showed us experimentally determined angles for those molecules which were notably smaller.
